Pearl of Andalusia on the Atlantic
Cadiz is one of the oldest cities in Europe, located on a narrow peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean in southern Spain. It delights with its narrow streets, white buildings and unique Andalusian laid-back atmosphere. It is known for its beautiful beaches (e.g. Playa de la Caleta), its impressive cathedral and its joyful carnival, one of the most colourful in all of Spain. It is the ideal place for lovers of history, sunshine and good cuisine - especially fresh seafood. Cadiz captivates with its tranquillity, authenticity and views.
Walking through Cadiz in the footsteps of history and oceanic charm
We will start our walk in Cadiz in the Spanish Square in the shadow of the monument to the Constitution of 1812. From there, we will set off through the narrow streets of the old town towards the Apodaca promenade, an elegant avenue that offers a picturesque view of the Atlantic.
The promenade will lead us to Genovés Park - the green heart of Cadiz. Along the way, we will also see the characteristic red edifice of the Falla Theatre, the Tavira Tower, the Mercado Central - the local market where the colours, smells and flavours of Andalusia come together under one roof.
We will also find out whether Cadiz really deserves to be called the "European Havana". And further into the city we will look for traces of the Phoenicians, the Romans and the remains of the Al-Andalus era. We will stop by the New Cathedral, which holds more secrets than you might expect....
It is also necessary to hook El Pópulo district - The oldest part of Cadiz. Stone arches, narrow passageways and the remains of Roman walls make a walk here akin to a trip back in time. It is here that the legendary Roman theatre, discovered by accident and now open to the public, is located.
Cadiz is also an excellent cuisine. Fried fish and seafood! You simply have to try it, and preferably in one of the bustling pubs not far from the beach.
And for dessert! How about an ice cream parlour run by a friendly Polish woman?
